Frequently we’ll present you a collector like you. He will speak about hobby in this interview. Today, it’s Damien speaking about cards!
-Bonjour, peux-tu te présenter aux lecteurs ? Hello, could you introduce yourself ?
Je m’appelle Damien, j’ai 24 ans. Je suis rédacteur NFL et College Football pour le site spécialisé dans tous sports majeurs aux USA : The Free Agent. Je suis très près la NFL et surtout Big Ten en College Football. En dehors du sport, je suis étudiant en M1 d’Etudes Culturelles du Monde Anglophone. Je m’intéresse tout particulièrement à la littérature américaine.
I’m Damien, I’m 24. I write for the US Sports media The Free Agent. I’m a huge NFL and Big Ten fan especially. Behind sports I’m a English student in Cultural Studies, and I’m particularly interested in American Literature.
-Depuis quand collectionnes-tu et comment es-tu tombé dans le hobby ? How long are you collecting ? How do you start collecting ?
Alors je collectionne activement depuis tout récemment. Depuis que j’ai commencé à écrire pour The Free Agent. J’ai eu l’occasion en écrivant pour ce média de découvrir la communauté française du sport US. Une grande et belle communauté. Parmi cette communauté il y a un grand nombre de collectionneurs. Donc c’est plus facile pour moi de collectionner maintenant que je connais toutes ces plateformes.
I have started collecting cards very recently. It dates back to when I have started writing for The Free Agent. I was pleased when I started this adventure to discover a fantastic French community around US Sports. Card collectors are a big part of that community so it was easier for me to start collecting cards thanks to these communities.
-Te souviens-tu de ta toute première carte ? Laquelle était-ce ? Do you remember your first card ? Which one was it ?
Oui tout à fait. Ma première carte était plus tôt un gros lot de cartes. C’était quand j’étais aux USA, dans le Maine plus exactement. Avec mes cousins nous faisions les courses et je suis tombé sur un énorme lot de cartes en promotion au supermarché. C’était des cartes NFL. J’ai craqué, j’en ai acheté un très grand nombre. Tout ça pour avoir mon préféré de l’époque : Alex Smith. Que j’ai réussi à avoir !
I sure do. Rather than talking about my first card, I should talk about a huge bunch of cards. I was shopping with my cousins in the US, in Maine and I came across a huge NFL bundle on sale. I didn’t hesitate and bought several bundles. I just wanted to get the card of my favorite player : Alex Smith. Which I eventually got !
-Quels sports, quelles cartes et/ou collections recherches-tu ? What kind of sports, what kind of cards or collections are you looking for ?
Je m’intéresse surtout aux cartes NFL et College Football. J’ai quelques cartes de NBA aussi.
I’m particularly interested in NFL and College Football cards. I also own a few NBA cards.
-Quelle est la plus belle carte de ta collection ? What’s your most beautiful card in your collection ?
J’ai une carte All American Draft de Justin Herbert. Je ne crois pas qu’elle soit particulièrement rare mais je la trouve magnifique. Il y a Herbert avec son beau maillot d’Oregon avec le drapeau américain en fond.
I own an All American Draft Justin Herbert card. I don’t know if it is very rare but I found it beautiful! There is Justin Herbert on it, with his stunning Oregon uniform and the American flag behind it. Awesome card!
-Quel est ton prochain achat ? What’s your next purchase ?
Probablement une boîte de stickers NFL Panini.
I’m probably going to buy a Panini NFL stickers box!
-Quel est ton budget mensuel ? What’s your monthly budget ?
Je n’ai pas vraiment de budget mensuel. Tout est encore très nouveau pour moi. Je parcours les différents sites qui vendent des cartes et les différents groupes de collectionneurs et je prends ce qui me plaît. Il faut dire aussi qu’une grande partie de ma collection a été très gentiment offerte par ma copine qui est très intéressée par ma collection et y participe activement.
I don’t really have a monthly budget. All this is very new to me. I mainly go through various websites and groups that sell cards and I buy whatever I like. I have to say that a huge part of the cards that I own were presents from my girlfriend who very much likes this collection and participates a lot in it!
-Quelle est la carte de tes rêves ? What’s your dream’s card ?
J’adorerais avoir une carte dédicacée par Justin Herbert. N’importe laquelle, juste une belle carte dédicacée par lui !
I would really love to own a card signed by Justin Herbert, whatever the card!
-Quel(s) conseil(s) donnerais-tu à un débutant ? Aurais-tu un bon plan à lui donner ? Have you an advice to a beginner ? Have you a good hobby plan ?
Je lui dirais de ne pas trop chercher à entrer dans les détails et des noms des collections etc. De seulement s’acheter les joueurs qu’il ou elle aime et puis la collection se fera toute seule. Je dirais aussi que se rapprocher des communautés Fr de collectionneurs de cartes est très intéressant car cela permet d’apprendre beaucoup de ces passionnés et surtout spécialistes tout en partageant sa passion.
I would say to not worry about all the details and the exact name of the collections. Just buy what you like, if you have a player that you particularly love, just buy the cards that you find interesting really. Don’t mind if it is rare or not. And I would really recommend you to get in touch with the local communities, in my case French communities. Because you will learn tremendously from them and you will have a chance to share your passion.
-Quelle est ta vision du hobby actuellement ? What’s your actual hobby’s vision ?
Alors je dois avouer que je suis fasciné par la communauté Fr autour du sport US d’une manière générale. J’ai tout découvert quand j’ai commencé ma très belle aventure chez The Free Agent et je suis tellement admiratif et heureux de pouvoir faire partie de cette communauté. Que ce soit les médias, les comptes de fans les groupes d’entraide et de collectionneurs, tout est magnifique. J’ai pu avoir accès à des ressources inespérées grâce à ça. Je me suis procuré l’album Panini NFL grâce à un groupe Facebook. Puis grâce à Benjiito Sports Cards que j’ai aussi découvert sur FB j’ai pu acquérir un nombre impressionnant de cartes magnifiques à un prix ridicule. Ca ouvre tellement de portes et c’est un plaisir de pouvoir vivre sa passion comme ça.
Il faudrait en parler davantage et encore davantage. Je pense que l’on parlera jamais assez. Tout le monde aime collectionner, malheureusement pas tout le monde ne sait comment. Il suffit juste d’avoir la plateforme nécessaire pour le faire, plus la communauté est grande plus les collectionneurs pourront s’échanger cartes et conseils!
I have to admit that I love the French community about US Sports. I discovered it when I started writing for The Free Agent and I’m amazed every day! I am really happy to be part of this community. Whether it’s websites, fan accounts or groups everyone is super nice and passionate. Thanks to that I had access to incredible ressources that I would never imagine would be possible. I got a Panini NFL stickers album thanks to a Facebook Group, I never thought I would be able to get such a thing! Then thanks to Benjiito Sports Cards I got a good amount of awesome cards for a ridiculous price. It opens a lot of doors and it is fantastic to be able to live my passion with others.
It needs to be more and more visible and vocal. Everyone loves collecting stuff of any kind. But not everyone knows how to do it! You just need the right platform to find the right people. The more people there are, the more trades will be possible. Whether we are talking about cards or tips and ideas!
