Le collectionneur du mois / Collector of the month : Olivier

9Bonjour chers lecteurs,

Dear readers,

Frequently we’ll present you a collector like you. He will speak about hobby in this interview. Today, it’s Olivier speaking about cards!

-Bonjour, peux-tu te présenter aux lecteurs? Hello, could you introduce yourself?

Je m’appelle Olivier, j’ai 38 ans depuis quelques semaines.

My name is Olivier, I’m 38 since few weeks.

-Depuis quand collectionnes-tu et comment es-tu tombé dans le hobby? How long are you collecting? How do you start collecting?

I’ve been collecting since I was little, really small. For the Winter Olympics in Alberville, we could cut points on milk bottles to win an Olympic poster, I think that even at 8, I never drank so much milk!!! My father was a serious stamp collector and I started there with a theme that would follow me long into my professional life: motorsports. Then I collected the miniatures especially at 1/43 and I fell head first in the hobby. We exchanged houses during the summer, which allowed me to go to Sweden two years in a row during the summer. I had the family boy’s room and the sport king, hockey was well present in the room. There were a few cards on a corner table, some famous strangers. Few years later, I was a student in Paris when I saw a lot on ebay, full of basic maps for cheap, I kept the guardians and I made it my first collection theme. I also found some cards of Nascar but without hanging.

-Te souviens-tu de ta toute première carte? Laquelle était-ce? Do you remember your first card? Which one was it?

I remember my really first hit, Eric Staal is a rookie at the Carolina Hurricanes and the SP Authentic 03/04 were released. A Parisian shop other than Faouzi was born, I don’t remember the name right now. We shared a box with the Saturday morning group and I pulled a RC/99 auto patch from Staal, it was the year of the Fleury, Bergeron, Pitkanen and a guy named Huet… We’ll talk about him later… I didn’t keep the card very long, maybe a few minutes, it gave me a nice credit from another collector’s.

In my short basketball period, I pulled a dual patch Jordan/Lebron on 3.

What kind of sports, what kind of cards or collections are you looking for?

I started with the hockey goaltenders but faced with the size of the spot, I reduced the sail to focus on Cristobal Huet, Marc Denis another goaltender (Blue Jackets especially).

I collected the Falcons’ QB Matt Schaub, I loved a game I saw him playing, I started Larry Bird but I quickly stopped, BTC was the big community, there were a lot of choices but basketball was never my priority. It kept me more than anything else. I worked on a few sets, the most complete one is probably the UD 04/05 Legendary, for me the most beautiful autograph set in hockey, I am missing 6 or 7 cards to finish it. The players who are 60, 70 years old have beautiful and neat signatures when the little youngs botch it in a hurry. I haven’t added autographs for a long time, but I’ll finish it one day.

Cristobal Huet is still my favorite player, I started collecting it when he was at the Los Angeles Kings, long before the madness of Montreal and the unreasonable prices. Few people have collected it for that long, Pascal Chapuis was the first and probably the most complete. My collection is not the largest but with more than 50% of the 1/1 checklist included and more than 85% off 1/1, I still have to have one of the 3 largest. The figures and the percentage are a little bit like we want them to be.

Among the nice cards, there are probably the 1/1 but also the scratch game from his period at the Monarchs (Kings minor leagues team), his dual autograph with Patrick Roy, the stick he gave me …. Because of my previous job (photographer in car sports), I had to go to the USA several times, I took advantage of going there to meet some Nascar drivers and I took advantage of my free time to get some autographs. I met Jeff Gordon, AJ Almendlinger, Jamie Mcmurray, Kyle Larson ….. In 2018, I took 6 days to visit Charlotte, the fief of the Nascar stables and to do the Fan Day of the Nascar (the drivers come to the HOF for a day of encounter), the opportunity to see Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Corey Lajoie and other pilots. During the team visits, I bumped into Joe Gibbs, the former US football coach (2 Superbowl to his credit) and owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, he took the time for his fans, at the same time we were 4 in the lobby, offered me his book and a few minutes later, a photo shoot was set up in the shop, I was hanging out and I met Erik Jones, the rookie in 20. I talked to the head of the shop who asked me where I came from and there she took Erik Jones out of the photo shoot so that we met… Suffice it to say that I quickly made him my pilot and that I have collected him ever since.

I also do Montoya en Nascar, although he no longer runs and, an autograph set, the Upper Deck Motorsport Masters, hard signed obviously with that big names, not easy to find 15 years after the release of the set… It’s moving slowly but surely.

What kind of sports, what kind of cards or collections are you looking for?

My favorite is surely the Huet’s Be A Player Memorabilia 2003/04 1/1 . One of his first 11 ever made and not a flashy stuff.

-Quel est ton prochain achat? What’s your next purchase?

Probably an autograph from a Nascar pilot, I collect winners in Nascar and only in hard signed, I hate stickers… A win in 1982, 1950 or 2019, whatever. I think I’ll add a car from Kyle Busch this year.

-Quel est ton budget mensuel? What’s your monthly budget?

I don’t have any, fortunately or alas. I do at heart and according to sales to the US on Facebook groups dedicated to cards. Beth (if you read us), thank you for your help! The advantage with the Nascar is the prices. You can find an autograph for a few euros, a big star rarely exceeds 50 euros for a nice series like National Treasure (equivalent of Ultimate in other sports), there are exceptions on patches but in general it is rather affordable. I centralize my purchases in the USA at Beth’s house and she sends me a shipment from time to time with twenty or thirty cards, I save on the shipping and the American collectors are less afraid to send.

-Quelle est la carte de tes rêves? What’s your dream card?

I already have many Huet and Juan Pablo Montoya’s 1/1, so let’s go for a beautifull Erik jones card or an wondefull autograph in Nascar like Dale Earnhardt Senior.

I’ll have to break the piggy bank one day for a Wayne Gretzky car for my set, but I’m in no hurry.

-Quel(s) conseil(s) donnerais-tu à un débutant? Aurais-tu un bon plan à lui donner? Have you an advice to a beginner? Have you a good hobby plan?

Do not want everything right away and especially not rush at everything at the same time, scatter and burn its budget in a few months. Favouring exchanges even if you lose value. Avoiding “opening boxes to open” is usually losing money. Thinking that we’re going to earn money on reselling a potential super card in general doesn’t work, once out of 100 bingo, the rest of the time it costs money. People come and go as fast.

What’s your actual hobby’s vision? Have you got fun facts since you’re collecting? What would you want to see growing up in this “closed” world in France and Europe?

I have long been a bit jaded by collectors on the forums as a whole, everyone thinks they have the rare pearl, the card that is worth more than the one of the neighbors, it is funny for a moment but it wears out fast. I’m a little tired of speculation, but if I understand it, everyone gets excited about a player or a pilot for 6 months and after a year, you find everything at $3 in dirty fire, you have to take your time. In Nascar, there are not enough people in France, 3 or 4 that does not make the hobby alive, without the American bands, the hobby would be dead. He’s dying, but with a little goodwill and a focus on trade, a mini community can survive.

The Saturday morning meetings in Paris were good times, the small group was really tight. In good memories, there are the Cristobal Huet’s games in Paris, at the 2007 All-star-Game or with the Team FRANCE, we kept him doubles and we gave them either to him or to his wife.
